Eco4Shore visited SD Tunas Kasih to spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastics on marine life and ecosystems. We aimed to recruit new “ocean heroes” to help restore our shores and oceans!
1. Key Takeaway
Understanding Marine Plastic Pollution:
Students learned about the sources of marine plastic pollution through videos and personal experiences, such as finding plastic trash on the beach. We explained that trash thrown into rivers or near shores eventually ends up in the ocean, harming marine life.
Three Easy Steps to Combat Plastic Pollution:
- Proper Disposal: Never throw anything into the environment; always use trash bins to prevent waste from reaching the ocean.
- Avoid Single-Use Plastics: Avoid using single-use plastics to prevent pollution.
- Use Alternatives: We showcased alternatives to plastic bags, bottles, and straws. Students were encouraged to use these alternatives whenever possible.
2. Main highlights
- Date: Monday, November 11th, 2024
- Location: Tunas Kasih School, Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai No.73X, Benoa, Kec. Kuta Sel., Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361
- Organizer: Eco4Shore
- Participants: Primary students from Tunas Kasih School
- Number of Participants: 70 students
3. Activities implemented
We used a similar approach of socialization like how we did it in SMPN 7 SATAP BAN, with the help of Eco and Jaw to explain marine plastic pollution and ways to tackle it.
a. Introduction to plastic pollution: We explained how plastic pollution occurs and why it is harmful, using engaging stories about the beach and marine animals.
b. Missions to save the ocean
I. Right or wrong? We showed pictures of people doing good actions such as recycling and bad pictures of people polluting the environment. Students should stand up if it is bad and sit down if it is a good action. This helps them identify what is good and bad practice.
II. No plastic is fantastic. We displayed plastic products and reusable products on the floor. There are two teams consisting of two players competing with one another. The goal is to collect reusable items while being blindfolded with directions given by their teammate. The team that collects the most reusable item wins. The reusable items are water bottles, metal utensils, and food containers. This teaches them that it is better to reuse than to use single-use plastic.
c. Quiz time, testing what the students have learned so far, and if they are able to answer the question, they get gifts from us.
d. Closing remarks with giving metal straws. We distributed metal straws to everyone, aiding them in refusing to use plastic straws!
4. Feedback
We picked two girls and two boys who were willing to provide how they felt or what they have learned from our socialization, here are their responses:
- Firstly, I am happy. We have learned that we shouldn’t use single-use plastic as it harms the environment.
- We should work together to keep our environment clean!
- I felt very happy and I learned to not use single-use plastic. Remember to not litter too.
- We should put the trash in its right place, the trash can.
