  • Students came to understand about the impacts of plastic pollution through designing posters that depicted the negative impact of plastic pollution on our environment.
  • Students were asked to brainstorm on practical solutions on how to combat plastic pollution and reduce plastic waste in our environment and include them in their posters.

2. Event highlights

  • Open registration: 28 July 2024
  • Registration deadline: 5 September 2024
  • Poster submission deadline: 30 September 2024
  • Award & prize giving ceremony: 27 November 2024

This competition was held at Chung Hua Middle School, and targeted elementary school students aged 7-10 years old. In total, we received 15 submissions.

3. Activities implemented

The “Planet vs Plastic” poster presentation was designed to engage children between 7-10 years of age in learning about environmental concerns and using their creativity to present solutions for a cleaner planet. The theme of the posters are “Cause, Awareness, How to Tackle Marine Plastic Pollution”.

Between July to September, the AJYELN Brunei team received 15 submissions from the elementary students of the school. The posters were judged by its content, the ability to convey the problem at hand, creativity – the unique ways in which students could depict marine plastic waste, and the solutions that they brought forward to solve the problem at hand.

The prize-giving ceremony was held on November 27th, where the 3 winners were chosen based on impact, creativity of the posters, and how well they addressed the theme. The “Planet vs Plastic” poster competition succeeded in engaging young minds on the crucial environmental implications of plastic pollution. In this process, the students learned about the problem in detail, while at the same time contributing creative ideas of their own to foster environmental responsibility.

4. Outcome (Awards & Winners)

The first prize was awarded to Desmond Lao Gui Hao, who depicted a world where plastic pollution is educed, and another world where plastic littered the environment. His artwork depicted a strong sense of despair in a world polluted by plastic.

The second prize was awarded to Nelson lau Gui Hoe, who created an informative infographic for elementary students targeting behaviors that cause plastic pollution.

Finally, the third prize is awarded to Nicole Zoey Lim Zhi Yii, whose artwork depicted ways on how to reduce plastic use. All three winning posters made use of creative visions of how young students can contribute to the fight against plastic pollution.

Through the program we noted that:

  1. Students put in a lot of effort into creating the posters, making them creative and attractive, showing their willingness to spread awareness regarding marine plastic waste pollution.
  1. Students provided plausible methods on how plastic waste in our environment can be reduced, such as carrying reusable bottles, bags and cups.
