15th of December, 2024, Tangke, Talisay City, Cebu, 35 participants

Reported by: Maeve Dizon, Jana Sofia Hupp, Mark Russell Lagunsad, and Rex Angelo Monrea

1. Key takeaways

  • Limited Opportunities for Creative Expression: Children from disadvantaged communities often have limited opportunities for creative expression, as their lives focus on practical, economic considerations for financial stability. Many outreach projects emphasize survival and vocational skills, overlooking artistic and emotional development. We believe art is essential for holistic growth, fostering creativity, emotional intelligence, and self-expression.
  • “COLOR ME A FUTURE” Project: This outreach project empowers children from the coastal fisherfolk community in Tangke, Talisay, to express their visions for their environment’s future through art. Under the theme “Color the Future They Sea,” children create doodles reflecting their hopes and concerns, particularly about pollution in their coastal river area. The project connects creative exploration with advocacy by incorporating environmental themes, providing a platform for the children to express their voices through art.
  1. Professional Revamping and Gallery Display: The children’s artworks will be sent to volunteer artists for professional revamping. Both the original and recreated artworks will be displayed in a gallery at PSHS-CVisC, allowing the community to engage with the children’s creativity. After the gallery, the recreated artworks will be returned to the children as a tangible reminder of their creative potential.
