The ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC) and the Ministry of Tourism of Kingdom of Cambodia co-organized the upskill training for spa professionals following the ASEAN Common Competency Standard for Spa Professionals. Cambodia is the lead coordinator to develop the ASEAN Common Competency Standards for Spa Professionals (ACCSSP), and it was the first training for spa professionals in Cambodia. The program was conducted for 20 days from 22 November to 17 December 2021 in Phnom Penh, and attended by 43 participants from 14 spa facilities. Local spa experts in Phnom Penh led the training focusing on practical subjects such as tourism and hospitality in the spa industry, anatomy, physiology, spa products and massage technique.
Also, two Japanese experts shared their knowledge in the online lectures: a travel & spa journalist on the needs of potential Japanese travellers at spa facilities, and a spa & wellness educator on the Japanese hospitality in spa services.
After the training, the experts spent two days to assess the understanding and skills of each participant, and all 43 candidates were awarded a certificate of competent by the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia.
To support spa facilities, the project has designed a non-verbal communication toolkit and distributed both hard and soft copies to the participants to utilize at their facilities.
